Elegy for Missed Time

All is quiet, sidewalks empty
Icy wind blows down my street
April breeze that came in gently
Swept away by snow and sleet

Each house is now a tiny island
A fortress where we wait and fret
Where was laughter now is silence
What was real we soon forget

This place that always was my comfort
This place that is, at root, my soul
Out of sorts and torn asunder
Out of reach to be consoled

I miss our dancing, our embraces
I miss the joy of gath'ring close
I miss loud music in dark places
I pine for our 'together' most

Because when all of this is through
And we awake an unfamiliar place
We will be changed, and meet anew
Rebuild our love, now face to face

Let's touch again when we are able
I grieve the time I've lost with you
Empty spots now at the table
And we'll have mourning yet to do

But through the sadness, hope is lurking
My friends - you make me burn with pride
Selfless, humble, always working
For better times on the other side.
